Collaboration

Workplaces are changing: the way people are working and the technology they are using is evolving fast. Collaboration is paramount to an organisations success. It is universally accepted that teams find better solutions than individuals. When a team is working in the right way and supported by great technology the results are amazing.

Companies need to offer dedicated spaces, permanent or temporary, owned or hired, where people want to come to work together, because they like their colleagues and feel part of an organisation that genuinely seeks to foster creativity and innovation. These spaces challenge groupthink but amplify the group genius, this in turn builds a sense of community, identity and culture which in turn drives economic growth and enhances diversity.

Influencing Factors

The influencing factors on any collaborative experience are process, design, technology and culture:

  • Process - It is best to augment established ways of working, build a path for emerging ways of workings influenced by the technology and introduce new ways of working which the technology allows.

  • Design - Environments have major impact on behaviour, be that physical spaces or virtual, so create the space for the task in-hand.

  • Technology – Technology is an enabler of objectives and tasks, it should be viewed as a tool-set and be relevant to the users need. It must also be feasible to deploy within typical project constraints of time, cost and quality.

  • Culture - an understanding of all users, audience and hosts is paramount to developing a good experience interface, ownership and ultimately adoption into Business As Usual.

All the elements above have impact and effect on the overall experience. All must be addressed at every stage of development. They have to be investigated, considered, understood and balanced holistically, constantly through the development and delivery stages.
